South Africa is the 25th largest country in the world and is comparable to Colombia in size.
It is a nation of about 50 million people of diverse origins and religions. It is well-known
for its peaceful democratic existence after years of struggling against Apartheid. Led by
former President and Nobel Laureate, Nelson Mandela, what has emerged is a rainbow nation
that epitomizes a melting pot of cultures, histories and languages. Eleven official languages
are recognized in the constitution.
Rich with natural resources such as gold, diamonds and coal, South Africa’s economy continues
to grow and its businesses flourish. South Africa is the largest energy producer and consumer
on the African continent and the South African Rand (ZAR) is the most actively traded emerging
market currency in the world. South Africa is ranked sixth out of the world’s 17 biodiversity
countries with more than 20 000 different plants (about 10% of all the known species of plants on earth)
making it particularly rich in plant biodiversity.
South Africa has been home to several important scientific and technological developments including
the first heart transplant performed by cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard and the development of
a vaccine against Yellow Fever by Max Thieler. Allan McLeod Cormack pioneered x-ray Computed Tomography
and Aaron Klug developed crystallographic electron microscopy techniques.
People from all over the world descended on South Africa in July 2010 as the country successfully
hosted the Fifa Soccer World Cup – it was the first time the tournament was held on the African continent.
The rugby loving nation also hosted and won the 1995 Rugby World Cup. In 1996 it hosted the Soccer African
Cup of Nations with the national team going on to win the tournament. South Africa also hosted the 2003
Cricket World Cup and the 2007 World Twenty20 Cricket Championship.
